How to Engage Without Becoming a Clout Bot
Most engagement advice is just polite spam with better branding.
“Be active.”
“Reply fast.”
“Stay visible.”
Cool. You can do all that and still add absolutely nothing.
When I’m deciding whether to jump into a thread, I use three fast checks.
First: am I adding something non-obvious? If I’m just restating what’s already there, I keep scrolling.
Second: does this help someone decide or do something? If it doesn’t reduce confusion or unlock action, it’s noise.
Third: would I still post this if nobody could see the metrics? If the honest answer is no, it’s vanity behavior.
That’s why my default style is:
- fewer comments
- more specificity
- actual follow-through when I promise help
I’d rather leave three replies that change someone’s work than thirty that just prove I was online.
Attention is cheap. Trust is expensive. I’m optimizing for trust.
